Residence Permits in Portugal: Renewals and Absences

Getting your first residence permit is a big milestone — but it’s only the beginning. To keep living in Portugal legally, you’ll need to renew your permit on time and respect the rules on absences. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your residence status in order until you can apply for permanent residence.

🪪 Your First Residence Permit

  • The temporary residence permit is generally valid for two years from the date it’s issued.
  • It’s granted for a specific purpose — work, passive income, remote work, study, family reunification — and you must keep meeting the conditions of that purpose.
  • If your situation changes (for example, you lose your job or change activity), you may need to inform AIMA or change the type of permit.

🔄 Renewing Your Permit

When?

  • After the first two years, the permit is renewed for periods of three years.
  • Start the renewal at least 30 days before your permit expires — ideally earlier.

How?

  • Many renewals can now be submitted online through AIMA’s renewal portal, when eligible.
  • In other cases, you’ll need an appointment at AIMA.

Documents you’ll usually need:

  • Valid passport and current residence permit
  • Proof of means of subsistence — employment contract, payslips, pension statements, tax return
  • Proof of accommodation — rental contract or property deed
  • Proof of your tax and Social Security situation (declarações de não dívida)
  • Health coverage — SNS registration or private health insurance
  • Criminal record — usually checked by AIMA
  • Proof that you still meet the conditions of your permit (for example, enrolment for students, activity for entrepreneurs)

For family reunification permits, renewals may also require proof of Portuguese language and civic training, under the 2025 rules.

✈️ Absences From Portugal

Your residence permit can be cancelled if you’re absent from Portugal for too long without a justified reason:

  • Temporary residence permit: no more than six consecutive months or eight months in total during the validity of the permit.
  • Permanent residence permit: no more than 24 consecutive months or 30 months in total within any three-year period.

Absences for justified reasons (such as work obligations, health or family reasons) may be accepted — keep documents that prove them. Golden Visa holders have their own, much lower minimum-stay rules.

⛔ What If Your Permit Expires?

  • Staying in Portugal with an expired permit without having applied for renewal can lead to fines and, in serious cases, removal and a re-entry ban.
  • If you’ve applied for renewal on time, keep the proof of your application — it shows that you’re waiting for AIMA’s decision.
  • If you anticipate problems (for example, missing documents), contact AIMA as early as possible.

🏠 After Five Years: What's Next?

After five years of legal residence, you no longer need to keep renewing a temporary permit. You can apply for permanent residence in Portugal or for the EU long-term resident status — two different options with different rules and advantages. We explain both in detail in our dedicated article on permanent residence.

🇵🇹 And Citizenship?

Portugal’s nationality law changed in 2026. For new applications, the legal residence period required for naturalisation is now generally 10 years (7 years for citizens of Portuguese-speaking and EU countries), together with language, civic knowledge and other requirements. Permanent residence and citizenship are different steps — plan both carefully.

💡 Tips to Avoid Problems

  • Set a reminder six months before your permit expires.
  • Keep your address updated with AIMA, the Tax Authority and Social Security.
  • File your tax return every year and keep your Social Security contributions up to date — they’re often checked at renewal.
  • Keep proof of all your applications and communications with AIMA.

🚀 Final Considerations

Keeping your residence status in order is about consistency: meet the conditions of your permit, respect the absence limits and prepare your renewal in advance. Five years go by faster than you think — and permanent residence brings real peace of mind.

📢 Expert Advice: Start preparing your renewal documents at least three months before your permit expires. Tax and Social Security certificates are often the ones that hold things up.
