Atestado de Residência: How to Get Your Proof of Address in Portugal

Sooner or later, someone in Portugal will ask you to prove where you live — to enrol your kids in school, update a contract or deal with a public service. When you don’t yet have bills in your name, the atestado de residência can save the day. Here’s what it is and how to get it.

🏡 What Is an Atestado de Residência?

The atestado de residência (residence certificate) is a document issued by your Junta de Freguesia (parish council) that confirms you live at a specific address in that parish. It’s often accepted as proof of address when you don’t have other documents, such as utility bills in your name.

📋 What You'll Usually Need

Requirements vary from parish to parish, but expect to bring:

  • Identification — passport, ID card or residence permit
  • Your NIF
  • Proof of address, such as a rental contract, property deed or utility bill
  • A request form, available at the Junta or on its website

Some parishes may also ask for two witnesses who are registered in the same parish to confirm that you live there, especially if you don’t have documents in your name.

📝 How to Request It

  1. Check your Junta de Freguesia’s website — many list the documents they need, and some let you request the certificate online or book an appointment.
  2. Go to the Junta with your documents (and witnesses, if required).
  3. Fill in the form and pay the fee.
  4. Collect your certificate — sometimes on the spot, usually within a few working days.

💶 How Much Does It Cost?

Fees are set by each parish and are usually just a few euros. Urgent requests may cost more.

⏳ How Long Is It Valid?

Validity depends on the parish and on the entity asking for it. Many organisations only accept recent certificates, so request it close to the date you need it. If it expires, you’ll need to request a new one.

🚀 Final Considerations

The atestado de residência is a small document that can unlock many everyday procedures. Find your Junta de Freguesia early on, check what it asks for and keep a copy of your rental contract handy.

📢 Expert Advice: Visit your Junta de Freguesia even if you don’t need anything yet — it’s your local service point for many everyday matters, from pet licences to local events.
