Getting Around Portugal: Public Transport for Newcomers
🚆 Trains: Getting to Know CP
CP – Comboios de Portugal is the national train operator. Its main services are:
- Alfa Pendular: the fastest and most comfortable train, linking Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon and the Algarve (Faro)
- Intercidades: intercity trains connecting the main cities and regions, such as Lisbon–Porto, Lisbon–Guarda, Lisbon–Évora or Lisbon–Algarve
- Regional and InterRegional: slower trains that stop at smaller towns — great for exploring
- Urban trains (Urbanos): suburban lines around Lisbon (Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja and Sado lines), Porto (Braga, Guimarães, Aveiro and Marco lines) and Coimbra
In the Lisbon area, there’s also Fertagus, a private operator connecting Lisbon to the south bank and Setúbal across the 25 de Abril Bridge.
🎟️ How to Buy CP Tickets
- Online at cp.pt — the easiest way to buy Alfa Pendular and Intercidades tickets, choose your seat and keep your ticket on your phone.
- The CP app — for timetables, tickets and journey planning on the go.
- At the station — from ticket offices or ticket machines.
- Urban trains in Lisbon and Porto use the local transport cards (Navegante and Andante), so you don’t need a separate CP ticket if you have a valid pass.
‼️ Always have a valid ticket before boarding. Travelling without one can lead to a fine.
💸 Save Money on Trains
- Book early: CP’s Bilhete Promo offers discounts of up to 65% on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades when you buy in advance.
- Age discounts: CP offers reduced fares for children, young people and seniors on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades.
- Other promotions: CP regularly runs offers for families, friends and weekend trips — check the promotions page on cp.pt before you buy.
💚 The Passe Ferroviário Verde
If you travel by train often, the Passe Ferroviário Verde is a bargain: €20 for 30 days for Regional and InterRegional trains, the urban trains of Lisbon and Porto, and Intercidades in 2nd class (with a seat reservation and a limit of two trips per day). Only the Alfa Pendular isn’t included.
🚇 Lisbon: The Navegante Pass
In the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, the Navegante system covers the Metro, Carris buses and trams, Carris Metropolitana regional buses, CP urban trains, Fertagus and the river ferries across the Tagus.
- Navegante Metropolitano: €40/month for the whole metropolitan area
- Navegante Municipal: €30/month within a single municipality
- Navegante +65: €20/month for seniors
For a monthly pass, you’ll need a personalised Navegante card with your name and photo. Request it early — it can take a few days to be issued. For occasional trips, you can load single tickets or credit (zapping) onto a reusable card.
🚋 Porto: The Andante System
In the Porto Metropolitan Area, the Andante system covers the Metro do Porto, STCP buses and CP urban trains. Monthly passes typically cost around €40 for the metropolitan area and €30 for a single municipality or smaller zone. You can also buy and use Andante tickets on your phone through the Anda app.
🚌 Long-Distance Buses
Buses are often cheaper than trains and reach towns without a railway station:
- Rede Expressos — Portugal’s main national bus network
- FlixBus — national and international routes
Tickets can be bought online, in the apps or at bus stations.
☀️ The Algarve and Smaller Towns
- Algarve: a regional train line runs along the coast between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, stopping at Faro, Albufeira (Ferreiras) and Tavira, among others. Regional buses (Vamus) connect towns and villages.
- Smaller towns and rural areas: public transport is more limited — often regional buses with fewer departures, especially at weekends. If you plan to live outside the big cities, check timetables before you choose your home, or plan on having a car.
📱 Useful Apps and Websites
- cp.pt and the CP app — train timetables and tickets
- Anda — Andante tickets on your phone (Porto)
- Carris Metropolitana — regional buses around Lisbon
- Rede Expressos and FlixBus — long-distance buses
- Google Maps or Moovit — journey planning across operators
🚀 Final Considerations
With monthly passes from €20 to €40 and discounted train tickets when you book early, public transport is one of the easiest ways to save money in Portugal. Where you live will decide how much you can rely on it — so factor it into your house hunt.
📢 Expert Advice: Planning a trip between cities? Book your Alfa Pendular or Intercidades ticket on cp.pt a few weeks in advance — the Promo fares can cut the price by more than half.
