Renewing Your Residence Permit Online: The AIMA Renewal Portal Step by Step
💻 What Is the AIMA Renewal Portal?
It’s AIMA’s online platform for renewing residence permits, available at portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt. It was launched in July 2025 and is now the main channel for renewing temporary residence permits.
📅 How the Renewal Calendar Works
AIMA opens the portal in cycles, according to the month your permit expires — usually in two-month blocks. For example, in 2026:
- In February, it opened for permits expiring in May and June
- In May, for July and August
- In June, for September and October
- In August, for November and December
You can only submit your renewal once the cycle for your expiry month is open. Keep an eye on AIMA’s announcements.
Older permits: permits that expired before July 2025 are generally handled through a separate AIMA platform, not the Renewal Portal. Some permit types, such as CPLP residence permits, follow their own procedure.
✅ Before You Start: Check These Points
- Your tax situation (Finanças) is regular — no debts
- Your Social Security situation is regular — contributions up to date
- Your NIF and NISS are correct and linked to your AIMA record
- Your address is up to date
- You still meet the conditions of your permit (job, income, studies, etc.)
If your tax or Social Security situation isn’t in order, the portal may block your renewal. Fix this first.
📋 Documents You'll Usually Need
- Valid passport
- Current residence permit
- Proof of accommodation — following AIMA’s current rules (see our article on proof of accommodation)
- Proof of means of subsistence — depending on your permit: employment contract and payslips, pension or passive income statements, invoices, etc.
- Specific documents for your permit type — for example, proof of enrolment for students
- Health coverage, where applicable
Prepare clear, complete scans — since 2025, incomplete applications can be rejected rather than suspended.
🛤️ Step by Step
- Wait for your cycle to open on the Renewal Portal.
- Access the portal and identify your residence permit.
- Confirm and update your personal details, especially your address.
- Upload the required documents.
- Generate the payment reference (DUC) and pay the fee within the deadline indicated — don’t leave it to the last minute, as references can take some time to activate.
- Submit the application and save the confirmation.
- Answer any requests from AIMA for additional documents within the deadline given (usually short).
- Download your proof of renewal, with a QR code — it shows your status while the card is being produced.
- Receive your new residence card by post at your registered address.
In some cases, AIMA may still call you for an in-person appointment — for example, to update your biometric data.
⏳ Deadlines and Your Status While You Wait
- You should request the renewal at least 30 days before your permit expires — ideally earlier, as soon as your cycle opens.
- The proof of a timely renewal request generally has the same effect as the residence permit for a limited period, which can be extended while AIMA decides.
- Processing times vary — the card can take several weeks or months to arrive.
✈️ Can You Travel While Your Renewal Is Pending?
Be careful. A renewal receipt isn’t always accepted for re-entry into Portugal or the Schengen area, especially at external borders. If you need to travel, get advice before you go.
🚀 Final Considerations
The online renewal portal has made life much easier for foreign residents in Portugal. The secret is preparation: keep your tax and Social Security situation clean, check when your cycle opens and submit a complete application.
📢 Expert Advice: Check your Finanças and Social Security status two to three months before your permit expires. Most blocked renewals come down to small debts people didn’t know about.
