Residence Visa Without an AIMA Appointment? Here’s What to Do

You’ve received your residence visa — congratulations! But when you look at it, there’s no AIMA appointment date attached. Don’t panic: this happens, and there’s an official way to request your appointment. Here’s what to do.

🛂 Why Does This Happen?

In many cases, when a Portuguese consulate issues a residence visa, the AIMA appointment for your residence permit is scheduled at the same time and indicated with the visa. But sometimes the visa is issued without an appointment — for example, because of AIMA’s availability or the type of visa.

Remember: the residence visa is valid for four months, and it’s during this period that you must start your residence permit process at AIMA. So it’s important to act quickly.

📝 The Solution: AIMA's Contact Form

AIMA has an online contact form — available at contactenos.aima.gov.pt — that allows people in this situation to request their appointment.

How to do it:

  1. Go to the AIMA contact form (contactenos.aima.gov.pt).
  2. Choose the subject related to scheduling an appointment for a residence permit with a residence visa (the exact option may vary depending on your visa type).
  3. Fill in your details, including your passport number and your consular visa number.
  4. Attach copies of your passport and your visa.
  5. Submit the request and save the confirmation.
  6. Wait for AIMA’s reply by email, with the date, time and location of your appointment.

In some cases, the appointment date is indicated in the observations field of the reply — read it carefully.

⏰ When Should You Do It?

  • As soon as you receive your visa — ideally before you travel, or right after you arrive in Portugal.
  • Don’t wait until the visa is about to expire — the four-month window passes quickly.

📋 What to Have Ready

  • Passport (and a clear copy)
  • Residence visa (and a clear copy)
  • Email address you check regularly (and check your spam folder)
  • Portuguese phone number, if you already have one

👨‍👩‍👧 Travelling With Family?

If several family members received visas without appointments, each person needs an appointment. The contact form can be used to request appointments for several people — see our article on the AIMA contact form for how to handle multiple requests.

🗓️ Preparing for Your Appointment

Once you have your date:

  • Gather all original documents and copies — the ones you used for the visa, plus any AIMA asks for
  • Prepare your proof of accommodation according to AIMA’s current rules
  • Get your NIF address updated and, if you’re working, your NISS
  • Arrive early and bring the appointment confirmation

⚠️ What If Your Visa Is About to Expire?

If your visa is close to expiring and you still don’t have an appointment:

  • Keep proof that you requested the appointment through the contact form
  • Follow up through AIMA’s official channels
  • Get professional advice — an extension of stay may be possible in some situations

🚀 Final Considerations

A residence visa without an AIMA appointment isn’t a problem — as long as you act quickly. The AIMA contact form is the official route to get your appointment and continue your process.

📢 Expert Advice: Submit the contact form the same week you receive your visa, and keep a screenshot of the confirmation. It’s your proof that you acted in time.
