NISS in Portugal: What It Is and When You Need It

If you’re going to work in Portugal, sooner or later someone will ask for your NISS. It’s the number that connects you to the Portuguese Social Security system — and without it, starting a job or working as a freelancer becomes complicated. The good news: there are two ways to get it — online or in person. Here’s how each one works and which is best for you.

🪪 What Is the NISS?

The NISS (Número de Identificação da Segurança Social) is your social security identification number. It identifies you in the Portuguese Social Security system, where your contributions are recorded and from which you can receive benefits such as sick pay, parental benefits, unemployment support and, later on, your pension.

Portuguese citizens receive it automatically. Foreign citizens have to request it.

💼 When Do You Need It?

  • Starting a job in Portugal: your employer needs your NISS to register you and pay your contributions.
  • Working as self-employed: you’ll need it once you register your activity.
  • Accessing Social Security benefits and support.

💻 Option 1: Request It Online

Foreign citizens can request the NISS online, through the Social Security portal, if they have:

  • An employment contract with a company in Portugal, or
  • A self-employed activity registered in Portugal

Documents usually required online:

  • A valid identification document (passport or ID card)
  • Proof of your work situation: your employment contract or the proof of registration of your self-employed activity
  • Your residence document: the EU registration certificate (CRUE) for EU citizens, or the residence permit for non-EU citizens

The process includes a biometric check (such as facial recognition) to confirm your identity.

⏳ How long does it take? Online requests can take from a few days to several weeks, depending on the volume of requests and whether all documents are correct. Missing or unclear documents are one of the most common reasons for delays.

🏢 Option 2: Request It in Person

You can also request the NISS in person, but not every Loja do Cidadão offers this service. It’s available at a small network of Espaços Cidadão, where you can often request your NIF, NISS and SNS user number together in a single request. Currently, the service is available at:

  • Lisbon: Loja do Cidadão do Saldanha and Loja do Cidadão das Laranjeiras
  • Greater Lisbon: Loja do Cidadão de Cascais, Espaço Cidadão de Oeiras (Oeiras Parque) and Espaço Cidadão de Loures (LoureShopping)
  • Setúbal: Loja do Cidadão de Setúbal
  • Porto: Espaço Cidadão of the União das Freguesias de Cedofeita, Santo Ildefonso, Sé, Miragaia, São Nicolau e Vitória
  • Braga: Espaço Cidadão de Braga (Município)
  • Algarve: Espaço Cidadão de Lagos and Espaço Cidadão de Olhão

The Government has said the service will be extended to more locations, so the list can change. Check the gov.pt page for this service before you go.

Documents usually required in person: as a general rule, just your identification document (passport or ID card).

That’s why the in-person option is usually the best solution if you:

  • Don’t yet have a residence permit or CRUE
  • Want to get the NISS on the spot, without waiting days or weeks

‼️ Arrive early or book ahead. Demand is high and tickets can run out, especially in Lisbon.

⚖️ Online or In Person: Which One Is for You?

  • Choose online if you already have an employment contract or registered self-employed activity, plus your CRUE or residence permit, and you’re not in a rush.
  • Choose in person if you don’t have a residence document yet, or you need your NISS right away.

💡 Good to Know

  • Having a NISS doesn’t mean you’re contributing. Contributions start when you begin working, as an employee or self-employed.
  • Activate Segurança Social Direta to check your record, contributions and requests online.
  • Keep your details updated — address, IBAN and contact details.

🚀 Final Considerations

The NISS is essential for working in Portugal. If you have your contract or activity and residence document ready, the online route is convenient. If you don’t have a residence document yet, or need the number quickly, the in-person route at a Loja do Cidadão is usually faster.

📢 Expert Advice: Before submitting online, make sure every document is clear, complete and valid. A single missing page can add weeks to the process.
